Satellites Coming Back For Another Shot
At Internet Access?
01/06/2005 06:52 AM
It looks like some people are starting to think that satellite broadband can be a viable player in the wireless broadband arena. A company that currently makes satellite receivers for trains and cars mainly focused on beaming TV to mobile vehicles, is looking to offer satellite based internet access to cars. They promise speeds of "up to 2 Mbps with upload speeds of 128 Kbps." Of course, this is just an empty promise right now. It should set off alarm bells whenever a wireless company uses the phrase "up to" in the description of their speeds. That means reality will be much, much slower. The "up to" means under absolutely perfect conditions that simply don't exist outside of the laboratory with more than one user. And, while they talk about throughput there's absolutely no mention of latency -- which has always been the big stumbling block for satellite internet services. High latency, even on a faster connection will make the overall experience seem much slower. Of course, there could be some applications for which this is useful (specifically, ones where latency isn't as big of an issue), but it has a long way to go before it's actually competitive with other mobile broadband solutions.

SBC Promises Fiber Too, Triple Play
Fight Is On

SBC Promises Fiber Too, Triple Play
Fight Is On
06/22/2004 12:09 PM
It looks like the "triple play fight" is officially on. Yesterday, Cablevision announced their plans to give away VoIP, basically free for a year to attract new customers to their voice, video and data broadband bundle. BellSouth quickly followed with their DSL-over-TV plans in order to offer a true triple play (rather than the hedge plan of teaming up with a satellite TV provider). Today, SBC announced that they're going to invest heavily in installing fiber to the premise in order to offer higher speeds and IP-based TV. This follows about a month after Verizon made their fiber plans clear. As Broadband Reports warns, however, the telcos have a history of promising fiber and never delivering, so it may pay to be skeptical until the lights on the modem are blinking. Either way, it does look like both sides (cable and telcos) are finally coming to terms with the new state of competition in the marketplace. In this instance, the cable companies definitely have the early lead. Adding VoIP to their bundle is much easier than either building up a FTTP network or figuring out how to do TV-over-DSL. There's a lot longer history with VoIP and many of the bugs have been worked out. That's not true with TV-over-broadband, which is more difficult to build in the first place. However, looking out a few years, if the telcos can work through the issues, they may eventually have a much stronger package, offering higher speeds and more services. In the short-term, they've been able to win more customers by focusing on offering much cheaper DSL, a strategy that ignores bundling for now to try to sign up customers at cable's expense. With most customers just focused on the broadband, this strategy makes sense (and makes BellSouth's plan to stop offering unbundled DSL particularly short-sighted). What isn't discussed very much however, is the wireless element. The telcos are in a much better position to also bundle in both mobile phone service and wireless broadband services that make it so you can connect anywhere. The cable companies, for the most part, have stayed out of that area, and such bundles could keep the telcos in the game if they start pushing a different triple play of voice and data "anywhere", until they can get the "quadruple play" together of voice, video and data anywhere. No matter what, it appears the battle is definitely on, which should mean more competitive offerings for customers.

Force Companies To Give Free Tech

Force Companies To Give Free Tech
Support For Life
12/22/2003 12:42 PM
Last week we talked about one idea to improve computer security issues: threa ten to put executives of software companies in jail if their products are not secure. That seemed a bit extreme. This week, however, the Washington Post's Rob Pegoraro has another interesting idea to improve technology product quality: require companies to provide free tech support for life. This way, he argues, the companies will quickly learn about problems, and it will be in their own best interest to get working fixes out there as quickly as possible. It will also give them incentive to do things better the first time around. He argues this is beneficial to the companies as well, as with better products, people will be more willing to spend money on them. I would add one adjustment to this suggestion: make an exception for companies or individuals who give away software for free. This would make it so anyone shopping for software can get a real benefit for paying for a product, and also doesn't unfairly burden those who prefer to just give away software.

Flaky Internet Access at Hotels -> Tech
Winter Will Continue
07/23/2004 06:14 PM

I'm currently at the Loews Le Concorde hotel in Quebec City, a 424-room business hotel recommended by some guys at the airport.  Nearly every aspect of the hotel operation reflects enormous management attention to detail.  Yet when it comes to Internet access they've outsourced it to a company called DataValet, "a trademark of TravelNet Technologies."  These guys try to hit you up for $20/day for a 100Kbps link but when I tried to connect their authentication server was dead.  So I had to call the 800-number to talk to a clueless tech support guy.  After about 30 minutes of flailing about I was finally able to connect.  Curious to see how the management, which would not tolerate a burned-out light bulb or a rubbed-off number on an elevator button, was able to tolerate this kind of incompetence, I called the manager.  Although a very nice and competent executive, she was undisturbed by the fact that it was so painful to connect to the Internet at her hotel.  She had even stayed at Hilton Garden Inns where Internet is free and therefore reliable (you just plug in and because they don't try to charge anyone they can use $50 routers; it is also about 15X the speed of "DataValet").  But as far as she was concerned it was something that they'd outsourced to a contractor and if it wasn't working it wouldn't reflect badly on her management.

I would submit that Internet is the only thing that she would have tolerated sucking in her hotel.  If she'd outsourced room service and the contractor told customers to call tech support and then walk down to the McDonald's next door, she would change contractors.  If the telephones in the rooms were flaky she would put in new lines, instruments, and switches.

Just as Web sites are an area where companies feel that they can lag leagues behind their competitors (who even bothers to try to do as good as job as Google?), Internet access seems to be one where an enterprise will cheerfully tolerate being 60X worse that its competition in terms of time to connect and then 15X worse in terms of bandwidth.  I infer from this experience that tech companies are in for another few very bad years in which customers won't want to pay attention to or invest in improved computer hardware and software.
